Biltmore House has more than 250 rooms, including 43 bathrooms!
Biltmore House was built in 1895 in Asheville, North Carolina. That’s probably when your great, great, great grandparents were your age!
It’s the biggest privately owned home in America!

Beginning when he was 12 years old, George made a list of all the books he read. During his life, he read 3,159 books. That’s about two books a week!
George and his team of craftspeople built Biltmore House. They started in 1889 and didn’t finish until 1895. It took 6 long years to build.

She was a descendant of Peter Stuyvesant, who was the first governor of Dutch colonial New York.
Edith married George Vanderbilt in 1898, more than 100 years ago.
Edith became the first woman to ever be president of the North Carolina Agricultural Society.

Cornelia was the only child of George and Edith Vanderbilt.
When she was 13 years old, Cornelia received 25 cents a week for her allowance. In 1913, 25 cents was worth $4.62 of today’s money.
Cornelia invited her friends to the grand Biltmore House for birthday celebrations. It was like having a party in a castle!

George Vanderbilt’s favorite pets included Saint Bernards.
These big dogs were allowed to run around throughout Biltmore House. Even in the kitchen!
“Cedric” was the name of one Saint Bernard.

Gargoyles are stone figures on the outside of Biltmore House.
Some gargoyles represent scholars, musicians, and saints. Others are just for decoration.
Gargoyles used to be added to buildings for a practical purpose. They were used as waterspouts to divert rain away from the structure.

This is the main tower in Biltmore’s winery. It was home to Biltmore's prize-winning dairy cows until 1958.
The clock originally only had three sides that told time. The fourth side, which faced the cow pasture, had a fake clock painted on it. Why? Because cows don’t need to tell time, of course!

The lions are marble statues guarding Biltmore House’s front door.
They were specifically made just for Biltmore House!
Lions are historically considered symbols of strength and nobility.
