5 Things to Expect at a Biltmore Wine Tasting

More From Biltmore 09/02/16

Written By Sharon Bell

You've heard that general admission tickets to Biltmore include a complimentary wine tasting. But what exactly does that mean? Here are five things to expect about your tasting experience!

1. Immersion in Biltmore history.

George Vanderbilt had a passion for collecting, which included filling his extensive wine cellar in Biltmore House. In the early 1970s, George Vanderbilt’s grandson, William Cecil, envisioned the idea of an estate winery that honors the agricultural heritage of his grandfather’s estate.

Take the entrance located in Antler Hill Village and enter into the underground tunnel that was orinally Biltmore's dairy barn. Designed by Richard Howland Hunt, son of the architect for Biltmore House, the building was converted into Biltmore's Winery in 1985. Mr. Cecil calls the winery opening “the most historic event since my grandfather had opened his estate to his family on Christmas Day ninety years earlier.”

2. Samples of up to 20 wines, which are arranged in order from sweetest to driest.

This is the perfect time to discover new wine preferences! Enjoy complimentary tastings of our handcrafted wines as our hosts take you on a journey through our reds, whites, and rosés. And don't pass on the pallett-cleansing crackers–like many of our guests, you may find they are unexpectedly delicious!

3. One to two ounces per taste.

Our wine hosts will supply you with two different glasses, one for white wines and one for red wines, as you journey through our wine list. Tip: Use one of the provided pencils to jot down notes about your favorites. After so many tastes, it'll come in handy when deciding which wines to take home.

4. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Biltmore's legacy of hospitality extends to Antler Hill Village and Winery. From questions about our Winery heritage to details of the wine-making process or recommended pairings, our wine hosts are eager to assist.

5. Having fun? Continue your wine adventure with a specialty tasting or behind-the-scenes tour.

Visit the Premium Wine Bar to experience Biltmore's sparkling wine selection, journey to our vineyards to learn how our wine is made, or enjoy a red wine and chocolate seminar. Be sure to ask about any seasonal tours as well–we often have unique experiences at limited times throughout the year.
