Biltmore’s Vineyard

Wine & Food 03/11/12

Written By Bill Alexander

Our vineyard is nestled in a valley near the French Broad River on the west side of the estate. The first vines were planted in 1971. Varieties grown include Chardonnay, Riesling, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. All grapes are picked by hand, with harvests averaging 250 tons annually.

Beyond our estate vineyards, our winemakers take inspiration from George Vanderbilt’s passion for selecting the best for Biltmore—from art to wine and beyond—as they choose quality grapes from a variety of regions. No matter the source, the majority of our wines are hand-crafted at our state-of-the-art winery in Asheville. Through our commitment to sustainability and locally-grown products, we are champions of the N.C. wine and grape industry and actively support local vineyards by purchasing fruit grown in N.C.
