In WNC alone, Muddy Sneakers will program with over 2,000 students this school year, giving them the chance to experience learning within a living laboratory, one only an outdoor classroom can provide, while exploring their community’s most valued lands. Their program will continue to provide the highest caliber outdoor science instruction in the state that brings to life the science curriculum through hands-on learning.
The proceeds from the Biltmore Community Benefit will provide necessary support to cover the costs of programming with all five Asheville City public elementary schools in the 2020-21 school year, totaling over 360 fifth-grade students. With six to ten expeditions over the course of the year for each school, this equates to a total of at least 2,170 student days of instruction, with approximately 1,450 of those programming days happening in Pisgah National Forest. This year alone, Muddy Sneakers expects to provide nearly 9,000 instruction hours in the Pisgah to Asheville City students, in furtherance of George Vanderbilt’s legacy of education and conservation in the region.
