Debuting during the FedExCup Fall, this world-class golf tournament takes place at the Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. Golf at Biltmore: our history

Golf was one of the earliest recreational activities enjoyed at Biltmore by George Vanderbilt (pictured here with golf club) and his guests.

Plans for a 9-hole “golf ground” on the estate were underway in 1895–1896 in the French Broad River area near the Brick Farmhouse and Lagoon. As with all aspects of his grand estate, Vanderbilt was personally involved with course design from start to finish.

Archival letters indicate that the Biltmore golf course opened around Christmas 1896 (one year after Vanderbilt opened Biltmore House to family and friends) and was quickly put into use. For unknown reasons, use of Biltmore’s private golf-link ended in 1901. At present, there is no golf course on the estate, nor does Biltmore offer golf activities.

George's wife Edith and daughter Cornelia continued to play golf, competing in tournaments, and ultimately, establishing nearby Biltmore Forest Country Club golf course, which opened in 1922. Cornelia drove the first ball over the links at the inaugural event on July 4, 1922.
